Chick Fever: Basics to Mail-Ordered Chicks

Everyone who has cared for chickens gets this every time in Spring, chick fever!! Even if you have not had experience with chickens you have probably seen the fluffy adorable chicks and thought you needed a few! In this post I will guide you through  the beginning, when you first get your chicks in the mail.

Now that you have ordered your chicks and marked the date on the calendar time to set up for them! Of course you have to decide were you want to keep them, whether in your garage, breezeway, or in an empty room.

Then you think 'hmmm... I cant just let them run around!' For this your going to need a brooder box[you can just use a cage or box for this]. In the brooder you with need to have a chick feeder and clean water. Then you will have to get a heat lamp for them, cause if the mother was caring for them she would let them come underneath her to keep warm.

When the day comes when you get your long-waited chicks unload them from the box and into the brooder, while checking each one for pasty butt[when the poop dries on the vent of a chick.] There! Your new chicks are home!! Always make sure they always can eat or drink when they please.

Now what? I would recommended watching them each day for any signs of disease and spend some quality time with them to make sure they aren't scared of you when they get older. And trust me, chicks grow up very fast! So its important to enjoy every moment of it!
